Click on photos for full version. The last post was my 2,666 th post (a misleading number since I don’t really think reblogs/non-original content should count as ‘blog posts’ but whatev.) The last post of the urban shrine beautification brought me back to Rochester, upstate NY, in October 2009 where I took these pictures with James & Christie staging a temporary lil fairy unicorn princess shrine (ahem excuse me ~*installation art~*) with moss n snail shells n ceramic critters n an abandoned building in the background after a fortuitous pillage of the Salvo. Scavenger wasteland nerd future punks forever.

Brimfield Antique Show THRIFT PORN! (..Well actually no bargain swooping could be had here so I didn’t get to buy for the shop, so this is a very minimal haul BUT STILL: I did get myself some amazing jewelry, antique photo album, and 1960s tunic. I picked up the 2 turquoise bracelets and crosses bracelet (pictured with other jewelry scored from pdx n California) Scored the *mint* photo album (1940s ?) in a nearby antique shop after the show as a family was discussing buying out the shop’s civil war clothing for the costuming of a hollywood film production! I was looking for an antique photo album that didn’t have any pictures in it so I could start getting my pictures developed and mount them and way stoked to find one without a broken binding/disheveled and torn from people ripping off the old photos and selling them individually divorced from the album.

Lastly, the scalloped 1960s soft cotton tunic is the pastel mod mini dress of my dreams-sage green, light blue, orange, yellow polkadots mmmmm. For those curious about the construction- the scallops are reinforced with lining that is hand tacked at the top, and hand stitched reinforcement at the slits in the sides- I can only imagine how labor-intensive this beauty was to construct. Scored it for $15!! !

Can’t wait to go back next year/this spring!

scenes from ‘merica, BRIMFIELD boston antique show foto overload 2.

…The way these fields, dirt lots, and shoulders of a busy highway in the middle of nowhere were transformed into spaces of peddling old and not-so-old junk… the way sellers set up and display their wares to domesticate a random stretch of field with an entire dinette set.. and the people that come from all over: the people that get up at 4:30am to vend food to the retail sellers that set up their tents at 6am, and the early bird annoying customers that arrive so early in the morning they need flashlights to go through the merchandise that is not quite up for sale yet…. I find it all so compelling. I can’t recall if I ever uploaded photos from 2 years I went to the Madison-Bouckville Antique Faire that takes place in Upstate NY but I really should if I haven’t.

…..’member when I said (http://thunderhorsevintage.tumblr.com/post/27897001155/behold-brimfield-antique-expo-boston-2012) I would upload BRIMFIELD Boston antique show fotos? Here’s some!

BEHOLD! BRIMFIELD antique expo/BOSTON 2012 research/travelogue THRIFT PORN coming soon :)

the thrift store I work at has been in business for about 2 years and the owner still doesn’t know the a-b-cees of the thrift biz… the shop is located in clinton hill/fort greene area and the majority of our shoppers are black and latino people that live in the surrounding area. the one thing that I think nearly all our shoppers have in common is that they don’t want broken, shitty looking stuff. the owner however thinks that people will buy low quality clothes or shitty looking stuff because they don’t have a lot of money or options. FALSE. My parents were both poor growing up. (and not like ‘kinda poor’, like ‘crazy fucking poor’. before my dad could work and afford a toothbrush, he would get his by scavenging at landfills. my mom lived in a house made out of cardboard and tin until she was a young teenager.) both of my parents HATE being reminded of having been poor or looking poor. they hate having broken shit and won’t even leave home without clean, new looking clothes. I’m not saying that the folks that shop at our store are exactly the same, but from everything I’ve witnessed working in thrift stores since I was 16, low-income people DON’T WANT SHITTY STUFF. They want DEALS on stuff that they need. THIS IS THRIFT STORE LAW.
(*Goodwill KNOWS this shit. Goodwill won’t even put a tee shirt on the floor that has been worn more than 5 times. for lovers of vintage tees, this is criminal, but for Goodwill its totally logical being that the majority of their customers are lower-income folks… but don’t think for a minute that Goodwill won’t make money on the lower quality shit that they get. all of that will be bailed up and sold to the ‘third world’, pure profit.)
**thrift store rants are now a regular part of my blog. deal with it.
***none of this really has anything to do with the carebears record player.

THIS IS SO SPOT ON. I am ALWAYS saying how I want to own a thrift store that sells cheap and QUALITY stuff, cause who the hell really wants a bunch of shitty things?! Not me. I am digging that Care Bears record player though ahaha.

THRIFT (vintage) PORN gpoy nyc edition! Can’t stand the “vintage” stores/$45 blouses at the Brooklyn “flea” market, but Jer and I have found 2 gems that are, not surprisingly, Latina/o and Japanese owned (as in Japanese/Latina/o places always have *legit* amazing vintage). Our friend VinVin is visiting us from Sacramento so we got the chance to visit these two spots on Friday and get yummy food. I scored a brown AND black leather daddy caps $30 for both- the brown one which I already sewed on a chain- and then the beautiful black satin western for $20, and the dark navy disco denim from Buffalo Exchange in Williamsburg for $20.

snapshots of life the past month

NYC! Moved! Huge endeavor, no internetz till the 19th, still getting settled! Trying to downsize from a hoarder’s palace/mansion in Upstate to a 2-room alley/place under 300sq ft in Brooklyn is no easy task! In the meantime here are some pics!

From the epic moving sale we had-

crazy boardgame given to me from george at ANGRYMOM Records but couldnt keep it!!

this was the stuff put on the curb for freeee:

best ithaca experience was having a yard sale- we made over $500 and got to meet interesting characters!

Last treasures from the clutches of upstate: 1950’s og western

notice the leather deatiling & metal snaps!

Bought this bizarre jumpsuit from a local vintage shop on sale for $5 because it was stained- planned to dye it black to cover up the stains and bring out the lace! Here is the Before:

AFTER!

Vhs score stolen from Mare & Thunderhorse when visiting CA in June! Thunderhorse’s cult vhs (aside from Desperately Seeking Susan) collection is nothing to mess wit

made some dresses right before packing up all my fabrics & sewing stuff:

CANDLEMASS! From vegan italian place in manhattan

OUR NEW HOME! BKLYN!!

THRIFT PORN: newest velvet acquisition

materialistic bastard overload! I cleared out my storage room and donated the bulk of an estate I bought in upstate in 2009 to Salvo… and spied the most glorious signed velvet painting in the backroom! Since I already have an impressive (ego *cough*) collection of velvets I iurgently nquired as to when it would be put out on the floor and was totally brushed off by 2 employees who said they had no idea when it would be put out..and left it at that! Excuse me! (shrill hoarder voice here) I just donated the entire contents of my roomy vehicle to your store! Can’t even help a hoarder out a lil?? (maybe that is store policy, to drive honest donators into extreme depraved acts of robbery?)

I lucked out tho and by the time I had finished unloading my donations (and gotten sufficently annoyed/dismayed) and headed inside it was already priced and put out on the floor for $6.99! HUZZAH! it is a prime specimen in perfect condition too!

also, for lonerwitch here are sum more pics of SPACE PEGASUS tapestry from my dear friend Leah I snuck in for u!!

UHNNNNNNHHHHH!

NEON WOMB/ candelabra

CANDELABRA of DESTINY

Haven’t been into my local antique shop for centuries and spied a righteous candelabra in the front window a few nites ago- came back and made her mine for $42!! Now, I do already have a pretty elaborate dweam castle jewelery setup with my bracelets stacked on a salvaged 1940’s lamp see fig a below:

Haven’t posted really of what my room looks like, will be sorely missing the opulence of post-industrial upstate NY cities and their beautiful huge cheap victorians when moving to nyc in august :(

This is my main jewelry shelf below:

and the rest of my room:

How amazing is this candelbara, the CANDELBARA OF DESTINY, I just got going to look somewhere wherever I put my jewelery he-man castles in a new place!!

It has bizarre glass, metal charms, and attached blue glass pieces- (no idea what it is/where it’s from/what cultural region this is from so if anyone has any idea lemme know!)

Appropriately, the pic below is my 666th of the last month :)

All sorts of Things look SUPER classy/mysterious on it too!!!

I also lucked out hard on a black Victorian Mourning Shawl for $32 that has beading and tassels and in perfect condition… But that and many others I will have to post soon, along with so many neglected THRIFT PORN posts(maybe you could tell that I have been avoiding going into my photo albums for a lack of time and instead relying on kitteh gif spam??)…SOON!!

Salvo THRIFT PORN!!

Nothing cures a long drive back from the airport then the opportunity to go to 3 Salvation Armys on deh way home! I’ve got stuffs I wanna upload from holidaze, but for now its just Upstate Salvo Treasure!

stetson hat & stacked heel boots!

amazing detailed tailored 1940’s wool skirt suit

yea thats a sealed POPPLES vhs!!!

purple spandex lace nightgown chopped into a mini and PRE-BEDAZZLED lined leather gloves chopped for meeeee

snuggly soft cardigans!

purrrfect jeffrey cambell black kitten flats in perfect condition!

and finally!

I spied the play stove last week at a Salvo and for once did not impulsively buy it…but then thought about it all week and how great it would be for displays, photo shoots, and as a PLANT STAND! The play stove oven door opens too! The real plant stand to the left I also got today.

so its come to this- I am becoming not a cat lady (I am that already) but a CACTUS/HOUSEPLANT MACRAME LADY!! AGHHHHHHH!!

but maybe its also a keen awareness to the amount of time I will be spending inside until April springtime? It was 3 degrees at one point today! I would rather be confined to this beautiful oasis of cacti/houseplant/succulent variety than a dusty un-aesthetically appealing mess of objects and chores!
